HDR students in computing are expected to develop a solid research proposal by the completion of the first six months of their candidature. They should do under close supervision of their research supervisors, and then submit it to the departmental HDR Director. The thesis proposal should be in the range of 10 – 20 pages (5,000 to 10,000 words). It should concisely address the following issues:

  1. The Research problem
    • A clear description of the research problem
    • Significance of the research problem
  2. Background (Literature Survey)
    • History of the problem area
    • Significant streams of research in the area
    • Main research approaches adopted in the area
    • Significant research results obtained in the area
    • Significant research problems current in the area
    • Where does your research problem fit in this landscape
  3. Research Methodology
    • How do you plan to approach this problem?
    • Why do you think this approach will work?
    • What is novel in your proposed approach?
  4. Time Line
    • What are the research milestones to be reached?
    • When do you plan to reach which milestone?
    • How feasible is your timeline? Why?
  5. Bibliography
    • Make sure all major works in the area are covered
    • Do not include in bibliography works that you have not cited in the body of your proposal.
    • Follow an appropriate (and consistent) bibliography style
