COMP349 - Spoken Language Dialogue Systems

Have you talked to your computer today?

Spoken language interaction with machines is becoming ever more common.
This unit explores the issues involved in building real Spoken Language Dialogue Systems (SLDSs). In the first half of the unit, students will gain the practical experience required to develop SLDSs, and learn basic strategies for designing user-friendly speech applications using VoiceXML.

The unit will prepare students with the skills and knowledge necessary to find employment in the developing speech-processing industry. We include a number of guest lectures from industry practitioners. In the second half of the unit, we look to the future, and to what's involved in developing sophisticated embodied conversational agents (ECAs) -- 'talking heads' that move spoken language dialog technology from disembodied voices to photo-realistic heads that use facial expressions to enhance the message being communicated by voice.

This unit is an Evening offering next Semester.
