Transition

This document addresses specific questions regarding the new curriculum. For generic questions, please refer to the general FAQ developed by the University. Contact Christophe Doche if you still need information after reading this document.

I've heard there are some mistakes in the Handbook, can we have a list for Computing related matters?

Yes, because of the introduction of the new curriculum, the printed version of the Handbook contains many errors. You should always refer to the online version. Below is the list of mistakes:

  • COMP225: offered in E2 [was D2]
  • COMP248: Rested in 2010 [was offered in 2010]
  • COMP323: Rested in 2010 [was offered in 2010]
  • COMP340: Admission to BCS [was BSc]
  • COMP347: Prerequisites changed to COMP247(P) and (COMP225(P) or COMP229(P)) and (MATH237(P) or DMTH237(P) or DMTH137(P) or ELEC240(P)) [ELEC240 (P) added to the list of suitable MATHS units]
  • COMP355: NCCW with COMP331, COMP340, COMP345, COMP346, ISYS346, ENGG300 [COMP345 was missing]
  • ISYS254: Not NCCW with any unit [was NCCW with ISYS201, ISYS227, ITEC200, COMP227]
  • ISYS301, ISYS302: Prerequisites changed to 40cp and (ISYS254(P) or COMP255(P) or ISYS227(P) or COMP227(P)) and 6cp(P) from 200-level COMP, ISYS, ACCG, STAT, BUS and BBA units [was 3cp (P) from 200-level COMP, ISYS, ... this requirement is already covered by ISYS254 or COMP255 (P) or ISYS227 (P) as far as eStudent is concerned]

What are the new Degrees and Programs available in Computing?

Six Degrees and two Majors are part of the new Curriculum for Computing.
They are

I don't wish to transfer to the new curriculum but certain units that are core in my old program (that I haven't studied yet) have been discontinued. What should I do?
An alternate program has been developed in most cases.

  • For the Bachelor of Computer Science
ISYS227 has been replaced by COMP255
  • For the Bachelor of eBusiness (Technology)
ISYS227 has been replaced by COMP255
COMP345 has been replaced by COMP355
ISYS346 has been replaced by ISYS355
  • For the Bachelor of eBusiness (Multimedia)
ISYS227 has been replaced by ISYS254
  • For the Bachelor of eBusiness (Management)
ISYS227 has been replaced by ISYS254
ISYS346 has been replaced by ISYS355
  • For the Bachelor of Information Systems
The requirement of ISYS201 and ISYS227 has been changed to 2 of ISYS201, ISYS227, ISYS254
ISYS346 has been replaced by ISYS355
  • For the Bachelor of Information Technology
ISYS227 has been replaced by COMP255
COMP345 has been replaced by COMP355
ISYS346 has been replaced by ISYS355
I have transfered to the new curriculum and I have already done a unit that seems close to a new unit that is required in the new program. Can I get an exemption?
Yes, you can get an exemption in the following cases:
  • For the new BeBus
    ISYS123 is equivalent to ISYS104
    ISYS227 is equivalent to ISYS254
    COMP345 is equivalent to ISYS355
    ISYS346 is equivalent to ISYS355
  • For the new BIT
    MATH135 is equivalent to DMTH137
  • For the Software Technology Major
    MATH135 is equivalent to DMTH137
    MATH237 is equivalent to DMTH237
    ISYS227 is equivalent to COMP255
    COMP345 is equivalent to COMP355
    ISYS346 is equivalent to COMP355
  • For the Information Systems Major
    ISYS123 is equivalent to ISYS104
    ISYS201 is equivalent to ISYS254
    ISYS227 is equivalent to ISYS254
    COMP345 is equivalent to ISYS355
    ISYS346 is equivalent to ISYS355
What MATH unit should I do?
There is no MATH unit required in the new BeBus.
If you have transfered to the BIT, you need to enrol in DMTH137 (unless you have already done MATH135, note that MATH130 isn't enough to obtain an exemption for DMTH137).
If you plan to major in Software Technology, you need DMTH237. This unit is equivalent to MATH237. However, if you don't have MATH237 but have passed MATH135, you can apply for a waiver and enroll in DMTH237. Otherwise, you need to do DMTH137 first.

Is COMP344 core in the Information Systems Major?
No, COMP344 is not core in the Information Systems Major. You need to do 9 credit points at 300 level from a range of units, including all ISYS units and COMP344.

I am currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Systems or in eBusiness. Is it a good idea for me to transfer to the BIT with a Major in Information Systems?
Certainly, it looks like a good idea. Though, you should be aware of a certain number of points.
You need 42cp in IT designated units. The full list of IT designated units can be found in the handbook. Note that old units e.g. ISYS123, ISYS227 are not present at the moment, but will be listed there eventually. So before applying for transition, count carefully how many credit points in IT you already have, and how many you can get.
You need a math unit, ideally, DMTH137 but MATH135 is fine as well (not MATH130 or MATH123). Note that DMTH137 is an IT unit. MATH135 is not. MATH135 is enough to get your BIT but won't bring you any extra credit point in IT.
