Unit Description

Depending upon a candidate's specialist stream, interests and employment circumstances, this unit may comprise literature research, a case study, a software project development, a project sponsored by the candidate's employer, or an industry internship. Candidates are expected to demonstrate initiative and independence in researching, executing and documenting a more involved ICT project. As a requirement of this unit students must participate in an Ethics Workshop and satisfy the related assessment requirements.

See the Class Schedule page for details of class scheduling for this unit. Note that the first class is held on the Friday of Week 2, but your first assignment is also due on that day, and you are expected to report on progress towards this assignment at the end of Week 1.

There are no separate practicals and tutorials for this unit; all class sessions are interactive.

Technology Used and Required

You will need daily access to the Internet via any web browser of your choice. You will be expected to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint to a high level of proficiency. You may use other document processing and presentation software by arrangement with the convenor. It is assumed that you have access to a printer driver or other piece of software that can produce PDF files from Word files. You may also find it beneficial to use Microsoft Project, or any other project planning tool you are familiar with.

Assessment Tasks

See the assessment page for a summary of the assessment tasks students must undertake to demonstrate their learning. To complete the unit satisfactorily, the student must achieve a pass mark in the unit overall, and must achieve a pass mark on their final report.

Teaching and Learning Strategy

This unit is taught via highly interactive lectures, and through the student's own project work. A subset of the students taking the unit will make a presentation to the rest of the class each week. Participation in discussion both in class and via the class iLearn website is expected, and contributes towards the overall assessment for the unit.

You should:

  • attend lectures in the weeks when lectures are scheduled;
  • monitor the class iLearn website at least once a day for updates;
  • maintain steady progress on assignments and your own specific project throughout the semester.

The slides used in class each week will generally be uploaded to the iLearn website after the class has finished, but these are intended as an outline of the lecture material only and are not a substitute for your attendance in class and any notes you may take yourself.
